FREE Film Screening: Prom Night in Mississippi

Including post-film discussion with Director Paul Saltzman

The Annapolis Valley Regional School Board's Initiatives in Diversity (AVID) Series features guest lectures and presentations on Race Relations, Cross Cultural Understanding, and Human Rights (RCH) related issues. The documentary follows the 2008 effort, led by actor Morgan Freeman, to bring the first non-segregated prom to the high school students of Charleston, Mississippi, Freeman’s hometown. Director Paul Saltzman has facilitated the post-film discussions at screenings around the country with powerful results. Admission is free to all members of the public within the AVRSB.

Stephen Butler Leacock, Canadian author, humourist and political scientist, will long be remembered for his best-selling book, "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town" (1912), as well as the numerous awards and honours he received during his illustrious lifetime. A native of Kentville, NS, Richard Donat has had an extensive career in theatre in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Halifax and has worked extensively in film, television, and radio.

Based in Truro, NS, Heather and Darryll Taylor’s highly-regarded puppet theatre has been entertaining families in Canada and abroad for 19 years. The company creates its own productions from concept to finished product, including fashioning the marionettes and creating sets, props, and costumes for every show. They are returning to MIPAC by popular demand, following their well-regarded appearance last season.

Last season, the Emily Gore School of Dance, in association with Windsor’s own Dorian Hall Academy, presented their lively show, The Amazing Dancing Circus, before delighted audiences at MIPAC. Dance and musical styles ranging from ballet to hip-hop graced the stage, and the students, who varied in age from 3 to 16, played to near-capacity audiences. MIPAC is pleased to welcome back these talented dancers, who will again offer two performances for family audiences.

Treasured Stories by Eric Carle"

Mermaid’s much-anticipated new production brings together old favourites and new friends. Featuring evocative music, stunning visual effects and innovative puppetry, the triple-bill celebrates three of Eric Carle’s most beloved tales. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" joins a whimsical menagerie drawn from the pages of "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" The poignant story of a young girl’s unusual quest, "Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me," completes a fanciful hour-long production.
